Carney to meet premiers as Canada faces down new U.S. tariff threat

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to meet with the country's premiers in Prince Edward Island on Thursday, as the United States escalates trade tensions with new tariff threats. This First Ministers Meeting occurs just days after U.S. President Donald Trump signed orders to implement a 50% tariff increase on a wide array of Canadian products, including hockey sticks, honey, and cement.

The U.S. administration stated that these tariffs, set to take effect on August 19, are a retaliatory measure. They cite provincial bans on U.S. liquor, Canada's supply-managed dairy system, and quotas on certain U.S. vehicles as the reasons for the increased duties.

Despite the U.S. actions, Canada's 13 provincial and territorial leaders have affirmed their support for Carney and his negotiating team. They are united in their efforts to de-escalate the trade dispute and work towards renewing the U.S.-Canada-Mexico Agreement. However, the premiers also plan to use the meeting to press Ottawa for increased federal healthcare funding and faster approval processes for major infrastructure projects.

The meeting with Carney takes place at the conclusion of a three-day conference in Charlottetown, hosted by P.E.I. Premier Rob Lantz.
