Cartagena readies for July 20th independence parade with 5,000 participants

Cartagena is gearing up to host its traditional Independence Day parade on July 20th, commemorating 216 years since the "Grito de Independencia" that initiated Colombia's break from Spanish rule. The historic walled city will serve as the backdrop for a significant patriotic celebration.

The parade is set to commence at 8:00 AM from Las Bóvedas, proceeding along iconic routes within the historic center. Participants will march along Carrera Segunda, adjacent to sections of the city wall, then turn onto Calle San Juan de Dios. The procession will continue through Plaza San Pedro Claver and Plaza de la Aduana before concluding at the Plaza de los Coches, a prominent city landmark.

An estimated 5,000 individuals are expected to participate. This diverse group includes members of the Public Force (military and police), students, teachers, families, and both domestic and international visitors. The Naval Force of the Caribbean is coordinating much of the event, with representatives from various operational units, including surface vessels, submarines, naval aviation, coast guard, special forces, the Gaula Military, and the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs (Dimar). Members of the reserve and veterans of the Korean War will also be present.

Civilian and military authorities will attend, including the Governor of Bolívar, Yamil Arana Padauí, and the Mayor of Cartagena, Dumek Turbay Paz. The event underscores the historical significance of July 20th for Colombia, a date that marks the beginning of the independence movement that started in Santafé de Bogotá in 1810 and set the nation on its path away from Spanish dominion over the territories of New Granada.

The National Police will also have a strong presence, with over 250 officers participating. The celebration is a key fixture in Cartagena's calendar, drawing visitors who often take advantage of the holiday season to explore the coastal capital.
