Cathar Castles in France Achieve UNESCO World Heritage Status

A decade-long effort has culminated in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage inscription for eight royal fortresses in France's Languedoc region. The announcement, made on Sunday, July 26, by the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea, marks a significant victory for the region. Hélène Sandragné, president of the Aude department, expressed immense pride, stating, "It is an immense pride to obtain the inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list for our fortresses. They join the great sites that tell the story of humanity." She emphasized that this recognition brings a commitment to preserving this heritage and developing a project that benefits the villages, their inhabitants, and visitors. The newly listed sites include the fortifications of Carcassonne and the castles of Aguilar, Lastours, Montségur, Peyrepertuse, Puilaurens, Quéribus, and Foix. This achievement is seen as crucial for revitalizing tourism and ensuring the economic survival of the surrounding villages. The region had actively lobbied UNESCO for this recognition, highlighting the unique historical and cultural significance of these medieval strongholds perched dramatically across the landscape.
