CBP Director in Hidalgo: 'Detect and Deter Those Trying to Breach Our Borders'

Carlos Rodríguez, director of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) port of entry in Hidalgo, Texas, affirmed that the agency possesses "all the resources" necessary to deter individuals attempting to circumvent border controls. He highlighted the agency's constant, daily surveillance efforts.

This statement follows a significant narcotics seizure announced by CBP on July 10. The operation, conducted at the Pharr International Bridge, resulted in the confiscation of over $10 million worth of methamphetamine. Rodríguez emphasized that this seizure underscores the agency's focus on combating the flow of illicit narcotics across the border.

"The threat of illicit narcotics is constant, but so is our vigilance," Rodríguez stated in an official press release. He added, "This seizure is a powerful reminder that our CBP officers are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, employing all resources to detect and deter those who attempt to circumvent our borders."

The specific seizure occurred on July 6 when CBP officers referred a tractor-trailer carrying a shipment declared as "cabbage" for a secondary inspection at the Pharr International Bridge. Drug-sniffing dogs alerted to the cargo, and an advanced imaging system scan revealed anomalies within the trailer. A subsequent physical inspection uncovered 477 packages containing a total of 532.1 kilograms (1173 pounds) of suspected methamphetamine, concealed within the trailer.

Following the operation, CBP agents seized the narcotics, the tractor, the trailer, and the merchandise. The estimated black market value of the seized illegal substances was $10,787,542. The Hidalgo port of entry, located at 9901 S. Cage Boulevard Suite B, Pharr, TX 78577, is part of the Laredo field office and frequently reports drug seizures and apprehensions of individuals attempting illegal entry into the United States.
