CBP warns of heavy traffic at new Gordie Howe bridge, advises advance I-94 application

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is alerting travelers to expect significant traffic delays at the newly opened Gordie Howe International Bridge, particularly as its pedestrian and cyclist path prepares to open on August 5.

To mitigate potential delays, the CBP strongly advises non-U.S. citizens to apply for their I-94 arrival record in advance. This can be done online or through the CBP Link mobile application, available on both Apple and Google Play stores. The agency stated that completing this step before arriving at the border crossing will lead to "shorter processing times, which will expedite their entry."

The bridge officially opened to vehicles on July 27 and features 20 lanes for passenger vehicles, 15 for commercial trucks, one dedicated bus lane, and the soon-to-open pedestrian and cyclist path. Authorities emphasize that all individuals crossing the border, whether by vehicle, foot, or bicycle, must possess a valid travel document.

Additionally, the CBP reminded travelers participating in the Visa Waiver Program that they need an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before seeking admission. The agency also reiterated that cannabis and cannabis-derived products remain illegal under U.S. federal law, regardless of state legalization, and are prohibited from being brought into the country.
