The war with Iran is driving up oil and gas prices in the United States, increasing financial pressure on motorists, food delivery drivers, farmers and the U.S. Postal Service.

Average U.S. gasoline prices topped $4 per gallon on March 31 for the first time since 2022, according to AAA. Analysts said prices were likely to remain elevated until shipping resumes through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman that carries one-fifth of the world’s oil supply.

Gasoline generally costs more in California because the state relies heavily on imported oil and imposes higher gasoline taxes. Prices, however, have risen across the country. Diesel, used by trucks, boats and trains that transport U.S. goods, has increased faster than regular gasoline, partly because supplies were already tight before the war began.

Oil accounts for about half the cost of a gallon of gasoline in the United States. Refining, taxes and marketing make up the rest, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Seasonal demand also affects prices, with fuel consumption rising during warmer months.
