CDU's Wiebke Winter challenges incumbent mayor in Bremen election bid

Wiebke Winter, the CDU's parliamentary group leader in Bremen, has declared her intention to challenge the Social Democrats' decades-long hold on power in the city-state. She was elected as the CDU's top candidate for the upcoming state election with approximately 92 percent of the vote at a state party convention. The 30-year-old jurist, who also co-founded the Klimaunion and is a member of the federal CDU board, aims to become Bremen's first female mayor. Winter urged her party towards decisive action, stating her frustration with a perceived lack of courage to initiate change in Bremen. She highlighted the city's high poverty and unemployment rates and its low position in educational rankings, vowing not to accept this status quo any longer. Winter announced her platform would focus on enhancing security, advancing digitalization, reducing bureaucracy, and ensuring reliable childcare. She explicitly ruled out any collaboration with the far-right AfD party. North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister President Hendrik Wüst, attending as an honorary guest, praised Winter and the Bremen CDU for their optimism and bold initiatives, calling them "the right ideas." A victory for the CDU would be a significant upset, as the SPD has governed Bremen since the end of World War II, currently leading a red-green-red coalition.
