CEBL championship to be decided in single game after opener cancelled

The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) is shifting its championship format to a single game after the scheduled Game 1 was cancelled due to unsafe playing conditions. The opening game between the Winnipeg Sea Bears and the Brampton Honey Badgers was halted early in the first quarter at Brampton's CAA Centre on Wednesday because of excessive condensation on the court surface.

League officials consulted with both teams, game staff, and venue personnel before deciding to cancel the game. A statement confirmed that the playing surface was deemed unsafe for competition. This cancellation forced the league to re-evaluate its plans for a best-of-three series.

Consequently, the CEBL announced that the championship will now be decided in a single game to be held in Winnipeg on Saturday. This decision reverts the league to the single-game format that determined the champion from 2019 through 2025. The game is scheduled to tip off shortly after 2:30 p.m. local time and will be broadcast on 680 CJOB.

Saturday's matchup was originally slated to be Game 2 of the series. A potential Game 3, if necessary, was scheduled for Sunday in Winnipeg. However, with Game 1 cancelled, completing a three-game series within the existing schedule became unfeasible. After discussions with both clubs, the league opted for the single-game format to ensure a champion is crowned.
