Washington D.C. is bracing for extreme heat as it prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence, a celebration spearheaded by President Donald Trump. The July 4th festivities are expected to be the hottest on record since the 1870s, with temperatures soaring over 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit).

The capital is currently hosting "The great American state fair," a 16-day carnival designed to honor the nation. The event, which began on June 25, has featured daily themes, including "Everyday health and well-being." This theme was exemplified by a pancake-eating contest, which drew criticism for its portrayal of health, and a "Freedom Sandwich" filled with peanut butter and marshmallow fluff.

The celebration has also seen several high-profile artist cancellations, including country singer Martina McBride and the funk group The Commodores. Rapper Vanilla Ice, however, remains unfazed, stating his willingness to perform anywhere, including for controversial figures. The event's opening night featured a performance of the national anthem by country singer Alexis Wilkins, who is reportedly the girlfriend of FBI Director Kash Patel. Reports suggest Patel may have used federal resources to escort her to concerts.

Several states, predominantly led by Democrats, have opted out of participating in the fair, which aimed to showcase each state's unique identity. The event, set against a backdrop of extreme heat and a presidential administration skeptical of climate change, underscores a series of contradictions that define this significant anniversary.
