Celebrity Makeup Artist Shen Miaomiao Reveals 'Beauty Magic' and a Shattered 'Girlish Heart' Moment

Shen Miaomiao, a celebrated makeup artist known as the "queen's exclusive makeup artist," has spent 26 years crafting looks for stars such as Vivian Hsu, Lin Xinru, and Hou Peitsen. Reflecting on her long career, she humorously remarks that she feels almost 80 years old, a statement that belies the deep experience gained from early morning calls, red carpet battles, and countless moments of pre-event tension.

Early in her career, Miaomiao worked as a junior makeup assistant on the classic "Flower Series" television dramas. She recalls being assigned to a 190cm tall male lead actor, despite her own 152cm stature. While initially admiring the handsome idol, her "girlish heart" was shattered when he deliberately tilted his head back, forcing her to stand on tiptoe and stretch her arm precariously just to touch up his makeup. This experience, she says, instilled in her a greater sense of empathy and respect when working in the entertainment industry.

Miaomiao generously shares three of her signature "beauty magic" techniques that she uses for her celebrity clientele. The first is the "ice-cold soothing method" to reduce facial puffiness, which she says instantly doubles the refinement of a makeup application. The second technique advises applying eye makeup before foundation, allowing skincare products to absorb fully during the process, leading to a more compliant base. Finally, she stresses the importance of wiping away any excess skincare or oil that hasn't been absorbed before applying foundation, as these can cause makeup to break down and become cakey later in the day.
