Celltrion Accelerates AI Integration Across Drug Development and Manufacturing

South Korean biopharmaceutical company Celltrion is significantly advancing its Artificial Intelligence Transformation (AX) initiative, integrating AI across its core operations in drug development, manufacturing, and administrative tasks. This strategic move aims to streamline repetitive tasks and enhance efficiency in research, production, and management, thereby bolstering its competitiveness in the global pharmaceutical market.

The most prominent application of AI is currently within drug development. Celltrion established a dedicated AI-based drug discovery team last year. It is progressively applying AI technologies, including bioinformatics (BI), to various stages of the development process, such as identifying, validating, and optimizing drug target candidates. The company anticipates that AI utilization will substantially shorten the typical decade-long drug development timeline and reduce associated costs.

In its manufacturing division, Celltrion is focusing on establishing AI-driven smart factories, particularly in its newly built facilities. This involves implementing physical AI technologies to optimize production processes. Concurrently, the company is investing in its workforce by offering reskilling programs to enhance employees' data analysis and AI utilization capabilities. Celltrion also plans to expedite the expansion of its drug pipeline through open innovation with external AI specialists.
