CENTCOM outlines military assets in use for Strait of Hormuz blockade against Iran

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has highlighted the extensive military assets deployed to enforce an American blockade on Iranian ports. This operation aims to isolate Iran while ensuring freedom of navigation through the critical Strait of Hormuz.

According to CENTCOM, as of July 29, its forces have "redirected 20 commercial vessels, disabled 2, and boarded 2." The blockade prohibits ships from entering or leaving Iranian ports, regardless of nationality. However, other commercial vessels are permitted to transit the Strait of Hormuz, aligning with the long-standing U.S. foreign policy goal of maintaining freedom of the seas.

The blockade involves a diverse array of U.S. military capabilities. CENTCOM's graphic showcases aircraft carriers, guided-missile destroyers, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance drones. Fixed-wing aircraft, including F-35s and F-15s operating from both land and sea, along with military helicopters and U.S. Marines trained for maritime interdiction, are also part of the operation.

Both aircraft carriers in the CENTCOM area of responsibility, the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS George H.W. Bush, are reportedly on station to support maritime security and stability. The U.S. military's capabilities extend to tracking and potentially intercepting vessels. Aircraft carriers provide airpower, destroyers offer air and missile defense and surveillance, and large drones enhance situational awareness over vast areas. U.S. Marines are trained for maritime operations, including stopping and boarding vessels, and can be deployed for shore-based raids or littoral operations.

This blockade is a component of a broader U.S. military campaign against Iran, which includes Operation Epic Fury, launched on February 28. By early April, the U.S. reported employing significant military assets in this operation.
