Central African Republic Confirms Cholera Outbreak with 24 Deaths

The Central African Republic has officially confirmed a cholera outbreak, with health authorities reporting 197 cases and a tragic toll of 24 deaths. Pierre Somse, the Minister of Health, announced the confirmation, specifying that the outbreak is concentrated in the Bimbo and Mbaiki health districts, located southwest of the capital, Bangui.

In response to the escalating crisis, the government has initiated measures aimed at curbing the spread of the disease. These efforts are being deployed in the directly impacted regions as well as in adjacent towns. Cholera, a disease transmitted through contaminated water and food, can lead to severe dehydration and diarrhea. While largely controlled in wealthier nations, it remains a significant threat in impoverished areas lacking access to clean water.
