Chacao plans seismic alert system, boosts post-earthquake recovery

The Chacao municipality is actively working to enhance its preparedness for seismic events, with Mayor Gustavo Duque announcing plans to install a seismic alert system. This initiative comes in the wake of recent earthquakes that shook Venezuela on June 24.

Alongside this, the city is preparing to launch a comprehensive plan informed by the results of a condominium census. The goal is to transform Chacao into a "national model of preparation and security" against future earthquakes.

Duque highlighted the relentless efforts of emergency teams, crews, and health personnel since the initial tremors. They have cleared approximately 83,700 tons of debris, while Salud Chacao has attended to 2,995 patients. Currently, around 400 families whose homes were deemed unsafe are being accommodated in hotels, receiving 790 meals daily.

In parallel, inspections of 3,100 buildings revealed that 82% are low-risk, 14% are moderate-risk, and 4% are high-risk. A broader initiative, "El Gran Levantamiento," involves 638 condominium boards and is reviewing 9,840 apartments. The mayor also presented a resource mobilization plan, including private sector partnerships and tax incentives, to fund necessary repairs and reinforcements, aiming to restore peace of mind to the residents of Chacao.
