Chen Ting-fei Seeks NT$335 Million for Tainan K-12 Dance Education Center

Tainan mayoral candidate Chen Ting-fei is seeking NT$335 million to turn a school redevelopment project into a citywide base for dance education.

Chen inspected Chungshan Junior High School with Education Ministry officials and Tainan City Councilor Chen Yi-chen. The proposal would link dance programs at Jinxue Elementary School, Chungshan Junior High School and Chia-Chi Senior High School, while seeking central government support for a new arts building.

The junior high school’s existing buildings are old, and parts of the campus do not meet current earthquake-resistance standards, Chen said. Redevelopment would free up about 4,500 square meters of land, creating an opportunity to combine the three schools’ dance resources.

Chen said the project should include more than classrooms. The proposed center would have professional dance studios, an experimental theater and a performance hall with capacity for more than 400 people. The goal is to give students space not only to train, but also to create, perform and exchange ideas.

The planned facility would serve the three schools and could later open its programs to students from other schools and arts groups. Chen said the complete proposal would combine teaching, creative work, training and performances rather than building only a partial education space.
