Chen Yu-cheng Registers to Run Again, Launches NFC Record of His Work

Taipei City councilor Chen Yu-cheng has registered to seek re-election and is asking voters to examine his record through an NFC card. A tap takes users to a digital report containing his policy positions and work over the past four years.

Chen, a member of the Taiwan People’s Party, said the party caucus had raised issues including housing justice, transportation, public housing, public safety and elderly welfare. He rejected suggestions that the caucus’s recent attacks on Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an reflected frustration over Chiang’s willingness to campaign jointly with the party only once.

The relationship between the Kuomintang and the Taiwan People’s Party is a major focus of the upcoming local elections. Chen described the parties as competing separately while arguing that Taiwan needs a third force. He said he had heard calls for cooperation between the Kuomintang and other parties since he began local service at age 12, but had not seen the Kuomintang sincerely sit down with a third force to work for the country and public welfare.

Chen nevertheless gave Chiang credit for improving his ability to answer questions and handle city issues during the past four years. He said Taipei still faced many problems and warned the mayor’s administration not to act as though victory were already secured. Chen called that criticism “deep love and strict expectations.”

He said his campaign headquarters would hold its founding event on October 18, the first such event in Taiwan to take place in a cinema, and would invite people from across the political spectrum. Chen also cited receiving a national animal-protection award, joining Chiang on visits to New York, South Korea and the Shanghai-Taipei City Forum, and providing more than 4,000 legal consultations with three lawyers. He said some of his council questions had received more than 3 million views. “We may not be perfect, but we are certainly serious and responsible,” he said.
