Cher says son’s wife is on a “quest for money” amid guardianship battle, report says

Cher and her daughter-in-law are openly clashing over who should oversee Elijah Blue Allman’s guardianship. In a supplemental brief filed in Los Angeles court on Aug. 28, Cher opposed appointing Marieangela King-Allman as a potential guardian for her son.

Court documents cited in the filing say the New Hampshire State Hospital and other family members remain opposed to King-Allman serving in the role. The filing points to her estrangement from Elijah, a previously pending divorce, and what it describes as her failure to help him and Kayti Pease before his arrest in New Hampshire. It also says the family believes she is returning to the dispute on a “quest for money and/or a bit of fame.”

King-Allman rejected that characterization in a statement shared on social media. “As Elijah’s wife of 13 years, I love him and want what is best for him, which is a robust and long-term treatment plan,” she said. “My husband and his mother have been estranged for many years, and she has repeatedly blocked my efforts to get him help. If she is in control of who becomes conservator, I believe it would jeopardize his chances of a hopeful recovery.”

Allman is being held at a psychiatric hospital in New Hampshire while awaiting criminal charges in two cases involving felony burglary, criminal mischief, simple assault, criminal trespass and breach of bail, according to court documents. The hospital initiated a guardianship proceeding on July 7. Cher has reportedly sought to have Allman’s half-brothers, Chaz Bono and Devon Allman, appointed instead.

A hearing was scheduled to determine whether King-Allman could or should serve after a dispute over the appointment. People reported that the judge moved it to Dec. 1. Allman and King-Allman married in 2013. She filed for divorce in 2021, withdrew or saw the filing dismissed in February 2024, filed again in April 2025, and had that filing dismissed in June 2026. Cher first sought a temporary conservatorship over her son’s estate in December 2023, citing claims that his life was at risk because of severe mental health and substance abuse problems.
