Chetumal airport gains customs section, Mara Lezama announces

Chetumal International Airport now has a customs section, opening the way for air shipments entering and leaving Mexico to undergo customs clearance in the southern Quintana Roo capital.

Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa announced the measure after its publication in Mexico’s Official Gazette. She said the agreement formally establishes the customs section and allows import and export cargo operations by air.

“This creates an important economic development ecosystem by connecting the airport with the Maya Train for freight, Chetumal’s Strategic Fiscalized Area, the Chetumal Free Zone and the Chetumal Economic Development Hub for Well-being,” Lezama said. The goal, she added, is to build an air, customs and fiscal logistics platform in the state capital.

The strategy also links the airport with the Maya Train as part of a broader connectivity and economic development plan. The Secretariat of Economy supported the measure. Lezama thanked President Claudia Sheinbaum for backing Chetumal and helping restore its prominence through concrete actions.

The agreement has already taken effect. Authorities expect it to increase commercial activity and improve air connectivity with Central America and the Caribbean, creating new jobs and opportunities for families in Quintana Roo.
