Chiang Wan-an's moves signal strategy to prevent blue camp's 2028 return, says councilor

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has recently surged in public discussion due to his involvement in organizing the 'I Am Human, I Oppose Drugs Taiwan' rally and advocating for a no-confidence vote against the current government. However, Taoyuan City Councilor Yu Pei-chen offers a different interpretation of Chiang's actions.

Yu suggests that Chiang is not aiming for the 2028 presidential election himself. Instead, Yu posits that Chiang's strategy is to ensure the blue camp does not win the presidency in 2028, thereby clearing a path for his own potential candidacy in 2032.

Speaking on a political talk show, Yu stated that Chiang's current "highest guiding principle" is to avoid running in 2028 while simultaneously preventing the blue camp from returning to power. Yu believes Chiang fears that if another candidate from the blue camp, such as Legislative Yuan Speaker Han Kuo-yu, were to win the presidency, it would diminish Chiang's own future prospects.

By orchestrating a no-confidence vote and potentially disrupting the blue camp's chances, Chiang is seen as playing a long game. Yu's analysis suggests that Chiang's bold moves are calculated to secure his political future, even if it means sacrificing the immediate presidential aspirations of his party.
