Chiang Wan-an skips city duties for rally, draws fire from opposition

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an faced sharp criticism for altering his official schedule to participate in a rally supporting a protest against the central government. Chiang, along with Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen and Keelung Mayor Hsieh Lung-chien, appeared at a press conference at the Legislative Yuan to rally support for a protest planned for the following day.

This move drew immediate fire from Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) New Taipei City Councilor Cho Chuan-ting. Cho contrasted Chiang's actions with those of New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih, who attended a site inspection in Tucheng. "In just one morning, you can see who is working on city affairs and who is just talking," Cho stated, implying Chiang was engaging in "Chiang's empty talk."

Cho further elaborated on the perceived disparity between the mayors, stating, "The abilities and vision of mayors from the same KMT party are worlds apart." He accused Chiang and Lu of using the rally to seek personal attention and cover up their "incompetence," abandoning their mayoral responsibilities. "The louder they shout at the central government, the more guilty they feel," Cho asserted.
