Chile and Venezuela Restore Diplomatic Relations After Break During Maduro's Rule

Chile and Venezuela have agreed to restore diplomatic relations, ending a period of estrangement that began in 2024 when Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro ordered the withdrawal of his diplomats from Chile and six other nations. The decision to re-establish ties was announced on Thursday, July 31, 2026.

Chilean President José Antonio Kast stated that the resumption of relations marks a "new era" for both countries. He believes this agreement will enable them to better address significant continental challenges, such as security, migration, and economic development. The severance of ties in 2024 occurred after Venezuela's presidential election results were questioned by several countries, including Chile, where Maduro was declared the winner.

This move follows a trend of several nations restoring diplomatic ties with Venezuela after a U.S. operation in Caracas in January of this year. For Chile, President Kast has been focused on deporting approximately 330,000 illegal migrants, a substantial number of whom are from Venezuela. The absence of diplomatic relations had presented a hurdle to this objective, making the renewal of ties a strategic step for Chile's immigration policy.

The breakdown in relations in 2024 was initiated by the Venezuelan government, which recalled its diplomats amid disputes over the election results. The current restoration of ties signifies a shift in diplomatic engagement between the two South American nations, aiming to foster cooperation on pressing regional issues.
