Chilean NGO builds first 17 homes for earthquake victims in Venezuela

The Chilean NGO Techo, active in 18 Latin American countries, announced the completion of the first 17 homes for victims of the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24.

The construction took place over four days in El Junquito, Caracas, and Guaracarumbo, La Guaira, one of the most affected areas. More than 120 local volunteers, joined by 20 international volunteers from Mexico, Colombia, and Chile, contributed to the effort.

During four days, more than 120 local volunteers mobilized to carry out the construction of these first homes, in addition to another 20 volunteers and workers from Mexico, Colombia and Chile.

Techo, which has operated in Venezuela for 15 years, initiated a humanitarian response plan immediately after the disaster to assess damage and identify priority areas. The organization is now planning subsequent construction phases in Falcón, Yaracuy, Carabobo, Aragua, and Miranda states, and is continuing its fundraising campaign.

Techo aims to build at least 200 homes for those displaced by the earthquakes, which left approximately 17,900 people homeless and caused over 6,500 fatalities. The completed 18-square-meter homes are constructed from a mix of pressed wood and fibrocement.

Techo plans the next construction phases in communities in Falcón and Yaracuy, in western Venezuela; as well as in Carabobo, Aragua and Miranda, in the north of the Caribbean country, and for this it maintains its fundraising campaign.
