Chilean officer shot during drug law stop in Antofagasta

A police officer in Antofagasta, Chile, sustained gunshot wounds during a routine stop related to a drug law violation. The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon in the Matta neighborhood, at the intersection of Huanchaca passage and Chiloé street. According to reports, the officer was conducting a check on a group of individuals when one suspect attempted to flee. The officer pursued and apprehended the fleeing man, at which point the suspect fired at least four shots, hitting the officer. The injured Carabineros officer was transported to the Regional Hospital of Antofagasta. Authorities have stated that his injuries are not life-threatening. Specialized units, including the ECOH Prosecutor's Office, OS-9, and LABOCAR of Carabineros, are handling the investigation. Law enforcement has deployed specialized units to the area as they search for the suspect who escaped after the shooting.
