Chilean police dismantle human trafficking ring, rescue 12 women from Bolivia

A joint operation by Chile's Investigative Police (PDI) and the Tarapacá Regional Prosecutor's Office has dismantled a criminal network that allegedly trafficked women from Bolivia into Chile for sexual exploitation. The operation, conducted on July 30, involved raids on six properties in Iquique and Alto Hospicio, resulting in the arrest of 10 individuals and the rescue of 12 potential victims, including two teenagers aged 16 and 17.

According to Chilean media reports, the operation apprehended five alleged traffickers and five "clients" in the act. The investigation, initiated in December 2025, was prompted by intelligence suggesting the existence of locations used for prostitution linked to human trafficking and child sexual exploitation. Prosecutor Camila Albarracín stated that the probe aimed to uncover potential human trafficking and child sexual exploitation schemes.

The PDI reported that the organization comprised both Chilean and Bolivian citizens. The group allegedly recruited women in Bolivia, transported them to Chile, and forced them into sexual exploitation in various establishments across Iquique and Alto Hospicio. The head of PDI Tarapacá, Prefect Inspector Mauricio Jorquera, highlighted the transnational nature of the case, involving a criminal structure dedicated to recruitment, transportation, and exploitation.

Of the 10 individuals detained, five had active arrest warrants. The court hearing for their detention and formal charges has been extended to August 5, as investigators continue to analyze seized evidence and identify all victims. The ongoing analysis of evidence and victim identification are crucial next steps in the case.
