China calls on US to stop threats of sanctions against AI companies

China's Ministry of Commerce has called on the United States to cease its threats of sanctions against Chinese artificial intelligence companies. A spokesperson for the ministry stated that recent reports of high-level U.S. officials demanding investigations into Chinese AI firms for allegedly using advanced U.S. models through "distillation" and violating intellectual property rights are unfounded.

Beijing asserts that these accusations lack any concrete evidence or legal foundation. The ministry characterized the targeting of Chinese AI companies and the threat of sanctions as a prime example of "typical AI hegemony." China is urging Washington to abandon its pursuit of Chinese AI firms and to adhere to the principles of a market economy and fair competition.

The U.S. administration has previously claimed to possess evidence of "industrial-scale" distillation campaigns by foreign entities, particularly Chinese companies, aimed at replicating American AI technologies. The "distillation" method in AI development involves training a lower-capacity model using the outputs of a more advanced model.

This exchange highlights escalating tensions in the global AI landscape, with China pushing back against what it perceives as U.S. protectionism and attempts to stifle its technological advancement in a critical emerging field.
