China Floodwaters Unleash Hundreds of Snakes; Resident Dies from Bite

A catastrophic dam failure in China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has led to a dangerous situation where hundreds of venomous snakes have escaped into flood-affected areas. The Liulan Reservoir in Hengzhou City breached on July 6th due to heavy rainfall, causing a local snake farm to collapse and releasing an estimated 800 to 900 snakes, including highly venomous cobras.

Tragically, at least one resident has died from a venomous snakebite in the aftermath of the flood. A woman in her 40s or 50s from Yunbiao Town, a major affected area, was bitten on the evening of July 6th. Her delayed medical treatment, due to communication disruptions and difficult travel conditions through muddy terrain, likely contributed to the fatal outcome.

Villagers involved in rescue efforts described the challenges faced in reaching medical facilities. The woman was initially transported by her daughter-in-law via an electric tricycle before being transferred to another vehicle. The journey was severely hindered by mud, complicating the emergency response.

The collapsed snake farm was located in Yunbiao Town, housing cobras, king rat snakes, and water snakes. While other flood-affected residents had reportedly been bitten previously, this is the first confirmed fatality directly linked to a snakebite during the flood disaster, exacerbated by the inability to seek timely medical attention.
