China is the biggest threat to Taiwan and Japan, President Lai tells LDP youth delegation

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te met with a delegation from the youth division of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party, stressing the shared threat posed by China and the necessity of bilateral cooperation to protect democratic values and regional stability.

Lai identified China's persistent gray-zone incursions and maritime coercion as the primary threat facing both Taiwan and Japan. He asserted that "without unity, there is no freedom," underscoring the need for collective action to defend democracy and peace. The president also extended condolences for the recent earthquake in Kumamoto, Japan, offering Taiwan's assistance and highlighting the natural, strong bond between the two nations demonstrated through mutual support during disasters and crises.

Masahiro Hiramatsu, a member of the Japanese House of Representatives, echoed Lai's sentiments, emphasizing that Taiwan and Japan, as nations sharing common values, should strengthen their cooperation to promote peace and stability in the region. He noted the long-standing friendly relationship between the LDP's youth division and Taiwan, spanning over half a century, and expressed a desire to deepen bilateral ties through increased exchanges.

Hiramatsu also addressed Japan's focus on strategic industries like semiconductors and AI, mentioning Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's initiative. He believes that strengthening Taiwan-Japan relations will benefit both countries' industrial development, including enhancing supply chain resilience and reducing reliance on single markets. The delegation's visit aims to foster more exchange opportunities and further solidify the robust relationship between Taiwan and Japan.
