China Open: Lin Chun-yi advances to quarterfinals after defeating France's Popov

Taiwanese powerhouse Lin Chun-yi advanced to the quarterfinals of the China Open badminton tournament with a decisive victory over French opponent Christo Popov. The match, held on July 23, saw Lin win in straight games with a score of 21-18, 21-13.

This win marks Lin's second consecutive victory against Popov, whom he has faced six times previously, with each player having secured three wins prior to this encounter. Ranked 13th in the world, Lin has had a strong year, capturing titles at the India Open and the All England Open. However, he had experienced a recent dip in form, exiting in the first round of his last three tournaments.

In the first game, Lin established a significant lead, reaching 16-8. Popov mounted a comeback, narrowing the gap to two points, but Lin managed to hold on and secure the set. The second game saw Lin maintain his lead from the start, though he faced a challenge when the score became tied at 9-9 due to unforced errors. He quickly regained control, extending his lead after the technical timeout and ultimately clinching the match with a lucky net cord on match point.

Meanwhile, in the mixed doubles category, Taiwanese pair Yang Po-hsuan and Hu Ling-fang also secured their spot in the quarterfinals. They achieved this by defeating Japan's Soichi霜上 and Ayaka Hobara in a hard-fought three-game match, with a final score of 14-21, 21-15, 21-19.
