China postpones launch of moon probe 'Chang'e 7'

China has unexpectedly postponed the launch of its "Chang'e 7" moon probe, a mission designed to explore the lunar south pole for signs of water ice. The launch, initially planned for early this week from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on the southern island of Hainan, was called off without a specific reason provided by the China National Space Administration.

The agency stated the decision was made "under the principles of caution, reliability, and absolute mission success." However, Thailand's National Institute of Astronomical Research (Narit), which has a research instrument aboard the mission, indicated that Tropical Storm Narra, which recently skirted the coast of Hainan, could be the reason for the delay. Narit suggested the launch might be postponed by as much as a month.
