China postpones lunar mission to search for water on Moon

China has postponed its planned "Chang'e 7" lunar mission, which aimed to search for water on the Moon's south side. The Chinese Manned Space Agency cited that the unmanned mission did not meet launch conditions. The exact reason for the delay remains unclear.

This mission is part of China's ambitious space program, which President Xi Jinping calls the nation's "space dream." China has invested billions in this program, with the goal of landing astronauts on the Moon by 2030. This puts China in a race with the United States' Artemis program.

Both the U.S. and China are competing to establish bases at the Moon's south pole, a region believed to hold significant quantities of water ice in its permanently shadowed craters. While the U.S. has confirmed the presence of water, it has not yet successfully sent a probe to extract it. American companies have several spacecraft heading to the same lunar region within the next year.

The potential discovery of large amounts of frozen water is a key driver of the lunar space race. Such a resource could be crucial for future space exploration and base establishment, as it could allow astronauts to produce drinking water, oxygen, and rocket fuel on-site, rather than transporting them from Earth.
