China reviews draft law to pursue graft suspects, assets abroad

China's top lawmakers are examining a new draft law designed to strengthen the country's legal framework for pursuing and convicting corrupt officials and recovering assets held overseas. The proposed legislation, a priority for the ruling Communist Party, aims to bolster international anti-corruption efforts.

State media has lauded the bill as strategically important, highlighting its role in preventing and punishing cross-border corruption. If enacted, it would be the latest step in President Xi Jinping's far-reaching anti-graft campaign, launched upon his ascent to power in 2012. This campaign has already led to the investigation of millions within China's bureaucracy and the repatriation of over 3,000 alleged fugitives since 2015, with approximately $10 billion in illicit funds recovered.

Authorities maintain a list of 100 most-wanted fugitives, with many believed to be in the United States and Canada. While China has successfully brought back 62 individuals from this list, its overseas operations have drawn criticism. Some foreign governments and human rights organizations have expressed concerns that China's methods may involve unauthorized surveillance, harassment, and coercion, potentially bypassing formal legal and extradition processes.
