China, Russia Conclude Joint Naval Patrol in Northeast Asia

Naval warships from China and Russia have completed a joint patrol that lasted more than two weeks, arriving in Vladivostok, Russia's Far East, on Wednesday. The patrol was officially described by China's state news agency Xinhua as part of the annual military cooperation plan between the two nations and stated it was "not related to the current international and regional situation." The task force, which departed from Qingdao in eastern China on July 13, sailed through strategically significant waterways in Northeast Asia. These included the Miyako Strait, Vries Strait (known as Etorofu Strait in Japan), and La Perouse Strait (Soya Strait in Japan). The patrol involved operations in the western Pacific, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the Sea of Japan. These routes are closely monitored by the United States, Japan, and other regional powers due to their strategic importance. The participating vessels comprised the Chinese navy's guided-missile destroyers Kaifeng and Anshan, supply ship Kekexilihu, and the Russian navy frigate Rezky Corvette. During the patrol, the forces engaged in various exercises, including helicopter cross-deck landings, joint counter-terrorism drills, humanitarian rescue missions, and visit-board-search-and-seizure (VBSS) operations, according to Xinhua. Chinese warships also conducted additional combat-oriented exercises tailored to real-time maritime and air conditions. This joint patrol is the latest in a series of expanded military cooperation between China and Russia in recent years. The two countries have pledged to deepen their ties, with China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently emphasizing the need for strengthened strategic coordination and a commitment to "never allow Japan to rearm."
