China, Russia denounce threats to North Korea’s security, including diplomatic isolation

China and Russia have jointly declared their opposition to isolating North Korea, advocating instead for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. Following a summit in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a joint statement emphasizing close communication and cooperation on peninsula issues.

The statement, reported by China's Xinhua News, stressed that maintaining peace and stability and pursuing a political resolution serve the common interests of regional countries and the international community. Both nations voiced opposition to threats against North Korean security, such as diplomatic isolation, economic sanctions, and military pressure. They urged involved parties to avoid escalating regional tensions, incentivizing military buildup, or politicizing issues, and to take meaningful steps to eliminate the risk of war.

China and Russia affirmed their commitment to continued close communication and cooperation to play a constructive role in finding political solutions for the Korean Peninsula, establishing lasting peace, and maintaining long-term stability in Northeast Asia. Notably, the joint statement did not reference North Korea's denuclearization. China's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun reiterated the country's consistent policy on the peninsula, stating China would play a constructive role in advancing a political settlement "in our own way."

The two countries also expressed their intention to continue cooperation on the Greater Tumen Initiative, a multilateral project focused on developing the Tumen River basin with participation from North Korea, South Korea, Mongolia, China, and Russia. This initiative aims to develop transportation, logistics, energy, and tourism along the river.
