China Slams Taiwan Military Drills as 'Armed Independence' Bid; Taiwan Rejects Claims

China's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) has strongly condemned Taiwan's ongoing military exercises, labeling them as a "sinister intention" by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities to pursue "armed independence." TAO spokesperson Zhang Han asserted that such maneuvers are futile against the might of the People's Liberation Army and serve only to incite cross-strait confrontation.

The so-called 'drills' harbor the DPP authorities' sinister intention of 'armed independence,' fully proving that they are inciting cross-strait antagonism and confrontation, and are the root cause of tension and turbulence in the Taiwan Strait.

In response, Taiwanese legislators dismissed Beijing's accusations. Legislator Wang Mei-hui stated that the "immediate readiness drills" are a necessary and correct response to China's military threats. She argued that Beijing's criticism stems from its unwillingness to accept Taiwan's existence as a sovereign nation and its efforts to strengthen its defenses.

The Taiwanese military's "immediate readiness drills," which began on June 22, are designed to enhance the troops' ability to handle emergencies. The exercises include simulating the defense of critical infrastructure against enemy infiltration, with units like the Army's 269th Mechanized Infantry Brigade conducting drills in the New Taipei City area. This involves the deployment of various vehicles, including Humvees, TOW missile launchers, M113 armored personnel carriers, and CM11 tanks.
