Chinese Automaker Omoda & Jaecoo to Open Factory in Argentina

Chinese automaker Omoda & Jaecoo has officially confirmed its arrival in Argentina within the next six months. The company, a subsidiary of the Chery Group, will operate with a direct branch from its parent company, bypassing the need for an importer. Crucially, Omoda & Jaecoo also announced plans to manufacture vehicles within Argentina.

Omoda & Jaecoo, which functions as a unified entity despite being two distinct brands, specializes in SUVs and crossovers. Launched at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show, the brands have introduced six models featuring hybrid, electric, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. These models, including the Omoda 4, 5, and 7, and the Jaecoo J5, J7, and J8, emphasize technology with advanced digital interfaces and artificial intelligence.

The arrival of Omoda & Jaecoo is significant for the Argentine automotive industry. It follows BYD's establishment of local representation, making it the second Chinese brand to do so. Omoda & Jaecoo highlighted the benefits of its direct subsidiary model, emphasizing long-term operational and financial stability, direct investment, strategic control, consistent global standards, and enhanced consumer protection, contrasting it with the potential volatility faced by companies relying on external importers.

The most impactful development is the planned establishment of a Knock-Down (KD) assembly plant in Argentina, accompanied by a regional spare parts warehouse. This move aims to improve after-sales service efficiency and speed up the supply of parts and accessories. While the specific location of the plant has not been disclosed, Chery Group recently acquired a largely unused Land Rover plant in Brazil. This strategy of KD assembly is already employed by various automotive brands in Argentina.
