Chinese automakers BYD, Geely, and Chery break into global top 10

The global automotive market has seen a dramatic shift in the first half of 2026, with Chinese manufacturers BYD, Geely, and Chery achieving record market share increases and breaking into the world's top 10 automotive producers. This surge marks a significant milestone for China's automotive industry, which has been rapidly expanding its influence on the global stage.

According to data from Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), these three Chinese companies have secured spots among the top 10 global automakers based on market share. Analysts note that Chinese brands have experienced an "incredible leap" not only in their domestic market but also internationally over the last decade.

BYD, which held a mere 0.6% global market share in 2016, has climbed to sixth place with 4.8%. While the company faced some challenges in its domestic market in early 2026, leading to a 45.9% year-on-year drop in deliveries in China for the first half, its overall global standing has improved substantially.

Geely, starting with a 1.5% share in 2016, now ranks seventh with 4.6%, bolstered by the global sales of its subsidiary brands like Volvo, Smart, Polestar, Lotus, and Proton. Chery, China's largest automotive exporter, shares a 4.1% market share with American giant Ford, placing it ninth. Chery's market share has grown from just 0.8% a decade ago.

Despite the impressive rise of Chinese manufacturers, established players like Toyota remain at the top, holding an 11% market share. Volkswagen follows with 8.1%, and the Kia-Hyundai group is third with 7.6%. Other notable Chinese manufacturers outside the top 10 include SAIC (11th, 3.7%), Changan (17th, 1.9%), and GWM (18th, 1.8%).
