Chinese Companies Explore New Green Cooperation Opportunities in Vietnam

Chinese companies in Vietnam are moving from “seeking opportunities” toward “long-term development,” with growing interest in industry, energy and green finance. That was the message at a September 7 forum in Ho Chi Minh City bringing together Chinese, Taiwanese and Hong Kong business associations in Vietnam.

Dương Văn Bân, acting chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City chapter of the Association of Chinese Enterprises in Vietnam, said global manufacturing trends were pushing companies to cut costs and improve efficiency through digital transformation, green development and stronger links across industrial supply chains. Better financial and professional services would support that shift, he said.

Dương described China and Vietnam as having complementary industrial strengths and close supply-chain links. He said the two countries could connect their resources, using Vietnam as a base for reaching ASEAN and international markets. Triệu Cẩm Quang, chairman of the Hong Kong Business Association in Vietnam, identified renewable energy, electric vehicles and the circular economy as new growth drivers in the green transition.

“If digital transformation determines how quickly we can move forward, green growth determines how far we can go,” Triệu said. He argued that green growth would encourage innovation, create new industries and generate jobs. He also pointed to the different strengths of the partners: Vietnam’s position in regional supply chains, Hong Kong companies’ finance, trade, logistics and professional services, and mainland Chinese companies’ technology, manufacturing and market access.

The forum also focused on artificial intelligence and clean energy. Benjamin Chiao of the Shenzhen Artificial Intelligence Technology Association said AI would become important to automating production as companies respond faster and meet new standards. He said Vietnam should consider AI applications in product design, manufacturing, testing and promotion. He expressed hope that Chinese companies could work with Vietnam to develop factories, employ local workers, build domestic supply chains and serve global markets.
