Chinese National Arrested at Sydney Airport Over Alleged $20,000 Bribe

Australian authorities have arrested a 39-year-old Chinese national at Sydney International Airport for allegedly attempting to bribe a public official with $20,000 in cash.

The alleged incident occurred on July 9 during a business meeting in Camp Hill, Brisbane. Police claim the man presented a bag of tea to a Commonwealth public official, which was later discovered to contain the substantial sum of money. The alleged bribery was reportedly for business gain.

Following the official's report of the incident, a joint investigation was launched involving the Queensland Police, the Australian Federal Police, and the National Anti-Corruption Commission. The man was apprehended on July 24 as he attempted to board a flight and was extradited to Queensland on Saturday.

He has been charged with one count of gift or offer a secret commission to an agent. The man is scheduled to appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.
