Chinese police patrol Croatian streets, find unexpected charm beyond football

Chinese police officers Chen Yue and Zhao Xuan are patrolling the streets of Zagreb, Croatia, as part of a joint initiative to assist Chinese tourists during the summer season. This marks their first visit to Croatia, a country they previously knew primarily for its football.

Their mission is part of the "Safe Tourist Destination" project, implemented by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The program aims to help Chinese tourists navigate and communicate with Croatian police, while also fostering cooperation between the two law enforcement agencies. Similar deployments are also taking place in Plitvice Lakes, Zadar, and Dubrovnik.

While Chinese tourists in Croatia generally do not face serious issues, common problems include lost documents, pickpocketing, and surprisingly, difficulties with setting up mobile internet. Chen noted that many Chinese tourists express feeling safe and welcome in Zagreb, often remarking on the helpfulness of locals.

Beyond their official duties, both officers have been captivated by Croatia's natural beauty and relaxed pace of life. Chen particularly enjoys the sunsets and the people's ability to "stop, enjoy the sunset, and help a stranger." Zhao was so impressed that he plans to return with his family in October, this time as a tourist. He even finds the public transport agreeable, noting it's far less crowded than in China. The officers also praised their collaboration with Croatian colleagues, describing them as "good friends."
