Chittagong University takes disciplinary action against teacher and two students

Chittagong University has suspended a teacher and a student and expelled another student over separate disciplinary matters, while withdrawing an earlier expulsion order against a law student.

The university suspended Dr Mohammad Abdul Wahed Chowdhury, a zoology professor, and Tahsir Hasan, a history student from the 2025-26 academic session. Md Wasim, a philosophy student from the 2024-25 session, was expelled. The decisions came at the university’s 568th Syndicate meeting, pro-vice-chancellor Professor Md Shafiqul Islam said.

The university suspended Abdul Wahed over an alleged social-media post that mocked the 2024 July Uprising. Shafiqul said the university formed an investigation committee after criticism of the Facebook post and would now establish another committee to examine the matter further.

Wasim was expelled and Tahsir received a one-year suspension over a clash between philosophy and history students. The Syndicate also withdrew the expulsion order against Afsana Enayet Emi, a law student from the 2018-19 academic session.

The university had expelled Emi and cancelled her academic certificate over an incident on Feb. 5, 2025. She had been accused of assaulting assistant proctor Professor Dr Korban Ali after a boat symbol was vandalised outside the then-named Sheikh Hasina Hall. Emi challenged the decision in the High Court, which stayed it and ordered a six-month suspension instead. A university official said Emi admitted her mistake and apologised during the proceedings. Because the six-month suspension had expired, the university withdrew the earlier order.
