CHP Deputy Demands District Chairman Resign or Cancel Protest

A dispute has erupted within Turkey's Republican People's Party (CHP) following a planned protest in Didim. CHP Aydın Provincial Deputy Hüseyin Yıldız reportedly pressured Didim District Chairman Dilaver Demir to cancel the demonstration, which was organized in support of Özgür Özel.

Demir recounted a phone call where Yıldız demanded the protest's cancellation, threatening resignation if Demir refused. Demir stated he would not cancel the march, leading Yıldız to demand his resignation. The district chairman emphasized that his position was secured through the genuine will of the party's members and delegates, not through "absolute nullity" or coercion.

I told him we would not cancel this protest. Then he said, 'Resign then,' and hung up the phone.

"I did not come here through absolute nullity," Demir declared, referencing a recent party controversy. "I did not come here by taking people of unknown origin and raiding the party. I did not come here and become district chairman by police force." He asserted that only the party's members and delegates have the authority to remove him from his post.
