Moviegoers in Bucharest faced disappointment Friday when the city's only IMAX cinema, Cinema City AFI Cotroceni, suffered a projector breakdown. The malfunction occurred on the opening day of Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," the first feature film shot entirely on IMAX 70mm film, which had been highly anticipated by cinephiles.

Since its July 17 release in Romania, the film has drawn large crowds, with tickets selling out rapidly across the country's three IMAX locations. The Bucharest cinema's failure left many who had taken time off work to attend early screenings frustrated. Those who had already paid for tickets were offered vouchers, but with subsequent showings also sold out, the vouchers offer little immediate solace.

Information regarding the repair timeline for the projector remains uncertain, with staff unable to provide details about Friday evening's scheduled 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. screenings. The film is expected to run for at least another month in cinemas. For those determined to experience "The Odyssey" in its intended IMAX format, alternative screenings are available in Timișoara and Constanța, or they may need to travel outside Romania.
