Chun Ha-ram accuses defense minister nominee of omitting son’s Yangji Village property

A dispute over an omitted commercial property has intensified around Kang Shin-chul, the nominee for South Korea's defense minister. Chun Ha-ram, acting leader of the Reform Party, says Kang's eldest son's property in Yangji Village, Bundang, was missing from the confirmation request submitted to the National Assembly.

Chun held an emergency press conference at the National Assembly on the 7th. He said the documents listed property owned by Kang's eldest daughter, who lives overseas, but did not include the eldest son's property in Seongnam's Bundang district.

The property holdings of the eldest daughter living overseas were included, but the eldest son's property was not listed.

Chun said he discovered the omission while checking the son's tax payments. The records showed that acquisition tax had been paid, leading him to identify a commercial property owned in Yangji Village.

He called the omission impossible to explain, arguing that property linked to the overseas-based daughter had been fully disclosed while a commercial property registered domestically and acquired by the son had been left out. Chun described this as an attempt to deceive the public and confirmation-hearing committee members. He also questioned the timing of the acquisition and raised what he called the “Yangji Village cartel” allegations.
