Chung Mong-gyu Resigns: 'All My Faults Are My Responsibility'... Steps Down as Football Association President After 13 Years and 5 Months

Chung Mong-gyu stepped down as president of the Korea Football Association (KFA) on July 6, concluding a tenure of over 13 years. He submitted his resignation after his final executive meeting at the Cheonan Korea Football Park, accepting responsibility for the shortcomings during his leadership.

Chung, who served four terms since becoming president in January 2013, acknowledged both the achievements and the disappointments during his time. "I have run with only the development and glory of Korean football in mind, but at times I have also brought deep disappointment," he stated in his farewell remarks. "All the glory and achievements are thanks to the players and fans, and all the shortcomings and mistakes are entirely my responsibility."

His presidency was marked by contributions such as the establishment of the Cheonan Korea Football Park and the development of a division system. However, he also faced significant criticism, particularly concerning the process of appointing national team coaches and an attempt to pardon individuals involved in match-fixing scandals. These controversies led to increased pressure for his resignation, especially after the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced the final results of a special audit of the KFA, demanding severe disciplinary action against Chung.

Following Chung's resignation, the KFA will transition to an acting president system. According to Article 23 of the association's regulations, one of the vice presidents will assume the role of acting president after receiving approval from the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee. As Chung's original term was set to expire in 2029, with more than a year remaining, the KFA must hold a new presidential election within 60 days.

Chung expressed his intention to return to his roots as a passionate football fan, cheering on Korean football from the sidelines. His departure marks the end of an era for the KFA, leaving the organization to navigate the selection of its next leader amidst ongoing challenges.
