CIA Chief Warned Russia Against Attacking NATO, Sources Say

CIA Director John Ratcliffe issued a stark warning to Russia against launching an attack on NATO, sources revealed to The Wall Street Journal. The intelligence chief's unannounced visit to Moscow earlier this week was reportedly aimed at conveying this message directly to Russian counterparts.

This warning follows U.S. intelligence assessments suggesting Russia may probe the NATO alliance with a "limited attack" in the next few years. The sources indicate that U.S. officials fear Russian President Vladimir Putin might feel cornered by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and increasing domestic pressure, potentially leading him to initiate aggression.

Such an attack could manifest in various forms, from sophisticated cyber operations to a small-scale ground invasion, with the Baltic states being potential targets. The lack of sufficient U.S. weaponry, partly due to the war in Iran, is also considered a factor that might embolden Putin to consider such actions.

While Ratcliffe did not meet with Putin directly, he reportedly engaged with other Russian intelligence officials. The Kremlin confirmed that Putin was briefed on these discussions. The White House has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the trip, with President Donald Trump describing it as "half routine." The CIA has declined to comment on the matter. This visit echoes a similar trip in November 2021 when then-CIA Director William Burns warned Putin against invading Ukraine.
