Cienciano advances in Copa Sudamericana despite loss to Botafogo

Cienciano of Peru has secured a spot in the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals, advancing on a commanding 6-2 aggregate score despite a 1-0 loss to Botafogo in Rio de Janeiro. The Peruvian side had established a substantial lead in the first leg, setting a new record for the largest victory by a Peruvian team over a Brazilian club in CONMEBOL history.

Botafogo's Danilo Pereira da Silva gave the home crowd a glimmer of hope with a goal in the eighth minute, making it 1-0 for the Brazilian team. This early strike briefly fueled aspirations of a dramatic comeback for the "Fogão" supporters. However, Cienciano tightened their defense and prevented further goals, effectively neutralizing Botafogo's efforts to overcome the significant deficit from the first leg.

The Peruvian club, which famously won the tournament in 2003, will now face Montevideo City Torque in the quarterfinals. Montevideo City Torque is considered the surprise package of the competition, having defeated Tigre of Argentina 2-1 in their own second-leg match to advance with a 3-1 aggregate win.

In the Botafogo squad, Panamanian player Kadir Barría entered the match as a substitute in the 64th minute, replacing Danilo dos Santos. Despite the loss, Botafogo's journey in the Copa Sudamericana has concluded, while Cienciano continues its quest for the title.
