Croatian tennis ace Marin Čilić's return to the ATP tournament in Munich was cut short as he was defeated in the first round by Germany's Daniel Altmaier.

The match, lasting just over an hour, saw Altmaier secure a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory. This marks the second encounter between the two players this year, with Čilić having previously dominated Altmaier at the Australian Open with a double bagel in the first set. However, the tables turned decisively in Munich.

Čilić, playing in Munich for the first time since 2013, a city where he reached the finals in 2010 and 2012, struggled to find his rhythm in the cold conditions. A crucial missed opportunity came early in the first set when Čilić failed to convert two break points at 2-2. Altmaier's strong serving proved decisive, and Čilić's subsequent unforced errors, including two double faults in a single service game, further aided the German's momentum, leading to the loss of the first set.

The second set followed a similar pattern, with Altmaier breaking Čilić's serve in the sixth game to secure the only break of the set, ultimately closing out the match. This early exit marks a disappointing end to Čilić's campaign in a tournament that has historically been a successful one for him.
