Civic Energy Federation slams 'hasty' electricity plan forum

The Civic Energy Cooperative Federation has sharply criticized the upcoming 12th Electricity Supply and Demand Basic Plan (Electric Plan) policy forum, labeling it a "hastily executed" process that lacks transparency. The federation, which operates renewable energy power plants as cooperatives, argues that the forum, scheduled for August 20th at the National Assembly Members' Office Building, is merely a superficial attempt at public communication.

Key criticisms include the limited capacity of the venue, accommodating only about 80 people, and a surprise pre-registration process that effectively blocked meaningful public participation. The federation pointed out that registration opened on August 15th, a public holiday, with announcements posted only the evening before and a press release distributed on the same day. This timing led to an "open run" situation where slots were filled instantly, which the federation believes suggests information was shared among stakeholders to monopolize participation.

Further concerns were raised about the online live streaming format and the withholding of forum materials until the day of the event. The federation argues that a YouTube stream offers only one-way communication, making it unclear if submitted opinions will be properly reflected. They also contend that releasing materials on the day of the forum infringes upon the public's right to know and constitutes a mere formality.

The Civic Energy Cooperative Federation is demanding that the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the steering committee for the 12th Electric Plan halt the "backroom discussions" regarding the "re-forecasting of electricity demand" and the "prospects for renewable energy deployment." They are calling for an apology from the minister and insist on a new forum that ensures transparency, genuine public participation, and timely access to information. The federation stressed the urgency of transitioning to a renewable energy-centered society to overcome the climate crisis.
