Civic groups from across Bolivia to meet in Cochabamba

Civic representatives from across Bolivia will gather in Cochabamba on Wednesday to discuss a common response on regional interests, the economy and the country’s democratic institutions.

The Cochabamba Civic Committee invited the country’s various civic committees to a meeting at 9 a.m. on September 2 at the Casa de la Unidad Cochabambina, the committee’s headquarters. The National Civic Movement asked Cochabamba to organize the event, according to the invitation signed by Cochabamba civic leader Jhonny Quintela and addressed to Hugo Aponte, the civic leader in Beni.

The stated purpose is to define joint actions to defend the regions and their economies, safeguard democracy and demand the rule of law in Bolivia. The meeting will take place before Cochabamba’s departmental commemoration of the 216th anniversary of its insurgent uprising.

In Santa Cruz, the board of the Pro Santa Cruz Committee is expected to meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The meeting is set to determine the date and time of the Assembly of Santa Cruz. Civic leader Stello Cochamanidis said the expanded board meeting would hear proposals from sectors that attended an earlier gathering, as well as from those unable to attend, before setting the assembly date.

The expanded board meeting today is only to set a date. The former presidents will listen to the sectors that attended yesterday, and to those who could not attend for some reason, although the great majority of civic leaders were there. They will hear the ideas and proposals, and the date for the Assembly of Santa Cruz will definitely come from that board meeting.
