Claudia Bauer (ÖVP) Opposes Ukraine's 'Turbo Accession'

Austrian European Minister Claudia Bauer has voiced strong opposition to a swift accession of Ukraine into the European Union. In an interview with the German publication "Welt am Sonntag," Bauer expressed concerns about the pace of negotiations and criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's approach.

Bauer stated that Zelenskyy has recently appeared to be attempting to dictate a timeline for Ukraine's EU membership. She emphasized that a "turbo-accession" based solely on a request is "naturally not possible." Her remarks highlight a growing sentiment among some EU member states regarding the practicalities and potential implications of admitting new members under accelerated conditions.

The Ukrainian president has, in my impression, often been characterized in recent months by wanting to dictate an accession date to the EU.

Beyond the Ukraine issue, Bauer also indicated her support for streamlining the EU's executive branch. She is in favor of reducing the number of European Commissioners, suggesting a desire for greater efficiency within the bloc's governance structure.
